Dean Forest Locomotive Group Acquires Historic GWR Coach 5863
Historic Coach to Undergo Restoration and Stabilization
The Dean Forest Locomotive Group CIO (DFLG) has recently acquired the historic GWR Coach 5863 from the Dean Forest Railway Society CIO (DFRS) for a nominal sum. This coach, which boasts a rich and varied history, is set to be given a new lease on life under the stewardship of the DFLG.
Built in 1934 as a Collett 3rd Class corridor coach, GWR Coach 5863 was initially part of the Great Western Railway’s fleet. The coach saw a significant transformation when it was converted to form part of the second Western Region Control Train, functioning as an emergency telephone exchange. This crucial role underscored its utility and importance during its early years of service.
In 1980, the DFRS acquired the coach, recognizing its historical value and potential for further use. The coach was repurposed in 1991 to serve as a sleeping coach for volunteers, providing much-needed accommodation. However, with the provision of a newer sleeping coach and the aging condition of Coach 5863, it became surplus to requirements.
The DFLG has now taken on the task of clearing the coach of all accumulated detritus. This initial step is crucial in preparing the coach for a thorough survey, which will identify the necessary measures for stabilizing the coach body. Despite its deteriorating condition, the DFLG is committed to bringing the coach back to its former glory.
In the immediate future, GWR Coach 5863 will be utilized for storage and as a workshop for woodworking projects. However, the long-term vision for the coach is far more ambitious. The DFLG aims to restore it to near-original condition, a project that will require both time and funding.
This acquisition not only preserves a piece of railway history but also demonstrates the commitment of the DFLG to the restoration and maintenance of historic railway artifacts. As work progresses, the coach will undoubtedly become a cherished part of the Dean Forest Railway’s heritage once again.
